JWM1
JWM1 is an autonomous community-safety robot built over two semesters at CU Boulder, designed to support street medical workers by expanding resources without exponentially increasing cost. It runs an NVIDIA Jetson with a custom-trained YOLO11x vision model and a Gemini Robotics-ER 1.5 reasoning client, on a from-scratch chassis and built with over 150 OnShape-designed, PETG-printed parts.
JWM1 is a four-wheeled autonomous safety robot built to support frontline medical workers and respond to overdose alerts on CU Boulder's campus and neighboring community. The full chassis, frame, and drivetrain were engineered from scratch in OnShape and 3D-printed in PETG, with over 150 custom parts mounted around an NVIDIA Jetson, an Arduino Mega 2560 for the real-time sensor loop, and a separate Arduino Uno isolated on its own 12 V circuit to drive the four rear motors. The robot perceives its environment through two cameras, a LiDAR streaming over Ethernet, five HC-SR04 ultrasonics, three analog microphones, and a USB GPS receiver. This feeds a custom YOLO11x model trained on H100 GPUs and a Gemini Robotics-ER 1.5 client for higher-level path reasoning. These models were supplemented with training runs using the BDD100k and COCO datasets. A React + Vite operator dashboard talks to a Node + Socket.IO server with a 5-second heartbeat from the Jetson, surfacing live telemetry, alerts, and manual control. Powered by a swappable EcoFlow battery system, JWM1 can run 13-hour shifts and supports four task modes: Follow-Me (Bluetooth RSSI tracking), Route Navigation (geofenced campus paths), Data Collection, and Overdose Response. With over 11 cubic feet of storage capacity, JWM1 is the perfect robot to carry all the vital support tools needed by frontline medical workers. The project is the result of two semesters of integration across mechanical design, electrical wiring, embedded firmware, computer vision, and full-stack web software. This Project was built to demonstrate what a single student team can ship when they own every layer of the stack.
