Band Width is a mobile app designed to make local music discovery easy and community-focused. The core of this app is to navigate and sustain the house-show ecosystem of college towns, which is an untapped and relatively uncommercial market. This ecosystem is important for small bands and students to share their passion for music and creating something bigger than themselves, and can be a gateway for them to grow.* Other platforms largely ignore this ecosystem because it is quickly ever changing and free, so there's no way to make money from it, as well as how small the community is.
Built using React Native with a JS backend, the app allows users to browse upcoming house shows, follow local bands, and view simple band profiles with links to their existing social platforms. Bands can post events, promote themselves, and connect with small venues or student hosts. The experience is minimal and intuitive. No algorithmic feeds, clutter, or endless scrolling. Instead, users open the app, find a show, and go. The audience includes college students, emerging musicians, and community-based venues. Key features include, event listings, band profiles, a simple following system, and a forum-inspired connection space for hosts and bands.
*Note: Queen, Rolling Stones, and Coldplay started as small college bands playing in garages in the UK.
